Dendritte Butte Oregon Rockhounding

Located 55 miles east of Prineville, Dendrite Butte is a popular destination for rockhounds, especially those seeking limb casts and petrified wood.

This 540-acre site is managed by the BLM as a designated recreational rock and mineral collecting area and is featured on the Central Oregon Rockhounding Map, along with other rock collecting sites.

Dendrite Butte is known for its colorful limb casts, which showcase vibrant shades of blue, pink, and green. In addition to limb casts, you can also find opalized and petrified wood throughout the area.

This is a Limb Cast Collection Area with limb casts displaying vibrant shades of blue, pink, and green. You can also find opalized and petrified wood here too.

Limb casts are formed when quartz deposits replace wood in volcanic ash cavities. The intense heat from the ash burns away the wood, leaving behind a tree-shaped mold.

Over time, the cavity is filled with chalcedony and other minerals. This process forms beautiful crystals in various hues, often with dendritic patterns reflecting the original wood shape.

When you visit, focus your rockhounding efforts on the northern side of the road (to your left as you approach). Be mindful of the South Fork Wilderness Study Area boundary on the right, where digging is prohibited.

There are two primary ways to search for treasures:

Surface Collecting: Explore the area on foot, looking for exposed or "float" materials scattered across the ground.

Digging: Use a shovel or pick to excavate and uncover hidden pieces below the surface.

While Congleton Hollow is nearby, there is no direct shortcut due to the private property separating the two sites.

Know Before You Go

The roads leading to Dendrite Butte are rugged and uneven. During wet weather, they can become muddy and difficult to navigate, so a 4WD vehicle is recommended.

The high desert environment can also be harsh and unforgiving, so it's essential to prepare properly before your trip.
