Beach Collecting Agates

Gleneden Beach is a fantastic place to find some cool rocks for your collection without too many people breathing your refreshing ocean oxygen.

This flat sandy shoreline stretches for one mile from Salishan Spit to Schoolhouse Creek, just 7 miles away from Lincoln City. The beach is secluded with no crowds, even during the summer and on weekends. In fact, you will probably encounter more seals and seagulls than people here.

This place is surrounded by eroded orange sandstone bluffs and beautiful coastal spruce forest and, while being mostly sandy, has gravel bars productive for rockhounding.

Gleneden Beach State Recreation Site provides access to the beach and has a large parking area and picnic tables. A short trail leads from the parking lot to the shore. Ensure you use public areas for access. For instance, the Salishan Coastal Lodge parking is private.

Gleneden Beach is perfect for hiking, beachcombing, fishing, surfing, wildlife watching, and searching for agates.

The gravel bars along the Schoolhouse Creek are excellent for finding agates. You can also find jaspers, fossils, and petrified wood.

Rockhounding here is excellent year-round, but the most productive time is during winter and on the low tides.
